The broad word
What kink covers
"Kink" is the broad word - everything outside the vanilla mainstream, from a blindfold to a full dynamic. BDSM is part of it; so are fetishes, roleplay, power exchange and a hundred things that do not fit a tidy label. Most people arrive at kink sideways: a stray thought that would not leave, a thing they liked more than they expected. If that is you, you are in ordinary company.
How people arrive
Getting into kink
- Curiosity, usually
- Most people get into kink because something caught and held their attention. Curiosity is a perfectly good reason, and the most common one.
- A partner, sometimes
- Plenty of people discover a kink because someone they trusted suggested it. Shared discovery is one of the better ways in.
- Reading and watching
- A great deal of kink begins with the private realisation that a scene in a book or a film did something unexpected. That realisation is data worth following.
- Permission to admit it
- For many people nothing changes except that they finally let themselves name what was always there. That is an arrival too.
If you are just starting
First steps
- Start with what you already think about. The kink worth exploring first is usually the one your mind keeps returning to, not the one that sounds most dramatic.
- Read before you leap. Every kink has people who have thought hard about how to do it safely. Find them before you find trouble.
- Talk to people who are already in it. Kinky people are, as a rule, remarkably willing to explain things to a respectful newcomer.
- Put it on your profile. "New to kink, curious about…" is one of the most answered lines on any site like this. Nobody worth meeting looks down on a beginner.

Common questions
Kink, answered.
What is the difference between kink and BDSM?
Kink is the umbrella; BDSM is one big thing under it. All BDSM is kink, but plenty of kink - a specific fetish, a roleplay, a particular dynamic - is not BDSM. On this site the words sit comfortably side by side.
I think I might be kinky but I am not sure. Is that normal?
Very. Most people spend a while in "maybe" before anything settles. Reading, talking and gentle experimenting are how the maybe resolves, and there is no deadline on it.
Do I need a partner to explore kink?
Not to start. A lot of early exploration is reading, thinking and working out what appeals. When you do want a partner, saying plainly that you are new and curious is the fastest way to find a patient one.
Is kink just about sex?
Not entirely. A good deal of it is about trust, control, attention and ritual - things that are charged without being strictly sexual. Different people find different parts of it matter most.
