The basics
What bondage is
Bondage is restraint by agreement — a wrist tie, a pair of cuffs, a full rope harness — done because being held, or doing the holding, is the point. It is where a great many people start, because the appeal is immediate and the gear is cheap. It is also where the most harm gets done by people who skipped the safety, so this page spends as long on that as on the rest.
The gear
Ways to be tied
- Cuffs and straps
- Padded wrist and ankle restraints. Quick on, quick off, almost impossible to get wrong — the right place to begin.
- Rope
- From a single wrist tie to intricate patterns. Rope rewards practice and is best learned from someone who already knows; there are classes if you look.
- Under-the-bed and over-the-door kits
- Straps that anchor to furniture or a door. Cheap, discreet, and easy to store where a nosy visitor will not find them.
- Positional and partial
- A tie that limits movement rather than removing it — hands behind the back, ankles together. Lighter, and a gentle way to test how restraint feels.

The five that are not optional
- Agree a safeword, and a signal for when a mouth is covered.A word to slow down and a word to stop, plus something to do with a hand — drop a held object, tap three times — for when speech is not possible. Non-negotiable.
- Keep safety shears within reach.Blunt-nosed EMT shears cut any rope or strap off in seconds. A knot that will not come undone under stress is the usual emergency, and fumbling for scissors is how a scare becomes an injury.
- Never leave a tied person alone, even for a minute. Not to answer the door, not to fetch a drink. Circulation, breathing and panic all change fast, and the whole point is that they cannot help themselves.
- Know where not to put pressure.Rope across the front of the throat, the joints, or anywhere you feel a pulse or a nerve is how lasting damage happens. Learn the safe placements before the fun ones.
- Check in, out loud, often.Fingers and toes warm? Hands not going numb? A tied person will put up with more than they should to avoid spoiling the mood — so you ask, rather than wait to be told.
For beginners
Starting out
- Start with cuffs, not rope. Learn how restraint feels — for both of you — before you take on knots.
- Buy proper gear. Stockings and phone chargers cut off circulation and do not release; cheap bondage kit is a few pounds and made to come off.
- Learn one tie well rather than ten badly. A single-column tie you can do in the dark is worth more than a gallery of half-remembered patterns.
- Put it on your profile. "Into rope, still learning" finds you the riggers happy to teach and filters out everyone else.

Common questions
Bondage, answered.
Is bondage dangerous?
It can be, and that is the honest answer. The dangers are known and avoidable — circulation, nerves, breathing, and being unable to get free in an emergency. Follow the five rules above and you have removed almost all of the risk.
I have no one to practise with yet. Can I learn alone?
You can learn the theory and tie on your own leg, but never tie yourself in any way that restricts breathing or that you could not undo if you passed out. Self-bondage is where the worst accidents happen. Learn with a person.
Where do I meet people who are into this in Pennsylvania?
Here, to begin with. Put rope on your profile and say whether you tie or are tied. Pennsylvania has in-person rope classes in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh if you want to learn hands-on once you have met people you trust.
Do both people need to know what they are doing?
The person tying needs to. The person being tied needs to know enough to speak up — what numbness feels like, when to call it. Honesty about who is experienced and who is not is part of the agreement.
